Procedure for the Selection of Saskatchewan Progress Party Candidates

This procedure outlines the candidate requirements and selection process for the Saskatchewan Progress Party.

Candidate Requirements

  1. A potential candidate must meet all requirements of section 42 of the Saskatchewan Election Act, specifically; an individual is qualified to be a candidate if that individual:
    1. is at least 18 years old;
    2. is a Canadian citizen;
    3. has ordinarily resided in Saskatchewan for at least six months preceding the day the writ was issued; and
    4. is not disqualified by The Legislative Assembly and Executive Council Act, 2007 or by any other Act from being a candidate.
  2. Requests and completes the Saskatchewan Progress Party Candidate Nomination Form.
  3. Provides a Criminal Background Check with their Nomination Form.

Selection Process

Once a candidate has submitted the required nomination papers the President and the Leader will consult with the party Executive and Riding Association (if active) and make one of the following decisions:

  1. Declare a nomination meeting in consultation with the prospective candidate.
  2. Accept the prospective candidate but delay the nomination meeting.
  3. Reject a prospective candidate.

In the case of decision 2 or 3 being made the prospective candidate will be notified in writing by the President.

In cases where two or more individuals are seeking the nomination of a riding the party executive will in consultation with the prospective candidates set a nomination date with reasonable membership cutoff and notice consistent with other party activities outlined in the Constitution.

Designation of Candidate by Leader

The Leader has the authority to designate a person to be the candidate without consultation or the execution of candidate requirements 2 and 3. This clause is intended to be used judiciously and predominantly in the case of electoral urgency.
